A lot of business owners open Google Analytics this year and see the same thing: a line going down. Rankings look roughly the same, the website has not changed, and yet fewer people are coming in from search.

The short answer: search has split in two. People still use Google, but more of them get their answer from Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Gemini without clicking anything. SEO and AI search optimization now mean two jobs at once: ranking in the normal results, and being the brand these AI tools trust enough to mention.

Here is what is actually happening, and what to do about it.

Why has our organic traffic dropped, and how do we recover?

Before fixing anything, find out which problem you have. Open Google Search Console, go to Performance, and compare the last three months with the same period last year. Look at two lines: impressions and clicks.

Impressions steady, clicks down. You are still showing up, but people are not clicking. The usual cause is AI Overviews or other features answering the question right on the results page. This hits informational pages hardest, like guides and “how to” posts.

Impressions and clicks both down. You lost rankings. Common reasons:

  • A Google core update that rewarded competitors with more helpful or more trusted content
  • Technical damage: a website redesign or migration that broke redirects, pages accidentally set to noindex, slow loading, or a messy Shopify or WordPress theme change
  • Content decay: your pages are old, and newer pages answer the question better
  • Stronger competitors who started investing in SEO while you were not

Traffic down in Analytics but not in Search Console. Check your tracking before you panic. A broken GA4 tag or a cookie banner blocking analytics can make traffic look lower than it is.

How to recover, in order:

  1. Fix the technical problems first. Crawl the site, fix broken redirects and errors, and make sure important pages are indexed.
  2. Update your best pages instead of writing new ones. Refresh facts, answer the question clearly at the top, add real examples and photos.
  3. Go after buying keywords, not only informational ones. AI can answer “what is a stroller travel system.” It cannot sell you one. Product and category pages for terms like “buy stroller Lebanon” still bring clicks.
  4. Build authority through mentions and links from real websites in your industry and your country.

Recovery after a core update usually takes months, not weeks. Google often needs to see sustained improvement before your pages come back.

How do you optimize our brand for ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews?

This is what people call AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization). The names are new. Most of the work is good SEO done properly, plus a few extra habits.

AI tools build answers from pages they can read and sources they trust. To be one of those sources:

Answer the question plainly. Put a clear, two or three sentence answer right under each heading, like the bold answers in this article. AI tools pull short, direct answers much more easily than long introductions.

Use headings people actually search. Write your subheadings as real questions: “How much does a padel court cost in Lebanon?” rather than “Pricing overview.”

Add structured data. Schema markup like Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Review and FAQPage tells search engines exactly what your page is about.

Make your brand facts consistent everywhere. Your name, address, phone, services and opening hours should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and directories. AI tools cross-check sources, and inconsistent information weakens trust.

Get mentioned on other websites. This matters more for AI than for classic SEO. When someone asks ChatGPT “best digital marketing agency in Beirut” or “where to buy toys in Lebanon,” the answer is shaped by reviews, news articles, “best of” lists and forum discussions that mention you. PR, partnerships and reviews are now search work.

Do not block AI crawlers by accident. Check your robots.txt file and your security settings. Some sites block crawlers like OAI-SearchBot (used by ChatGPT search) without knowing it, which keeps them out of those answers.

Do not ignore Bing. ChatGPT’s search draws partly on Bing’s index. Submitting your site to Bing Webmaster Tools takes ten minutes.

Track it. Ask the AI tools your customers would ask, every month, and note whether your brand appears. It is manual, but it tells you more than any dashboard right now.

How long does a new website or e-commerce shop take to rank on local search terms?

For a brand-new site, expect this:

  • Google Business Profile (the map results): can start showing within a few weeks once verified, especially with photos, reviews and correct categories.
  • Low-competition local terms (for example, a specific product plus “Lebanon” or a neighborhood): usually 3 to 6 months.
  • Competitive terms (like “online shopping Lebanon” or “clinic Dubai”): 6 to 12 months or more, and only with steady content and links.

New domains start with no trust, so Google tests them slowly. You can speed things up with a solid technical setup from day one, product and category pages written for real searches, and a few quality links from local sites.

One thing specific to Lebanon: people search in English, French, Arabic and Arabizi, often mixing them. Someone might type “فستان سهرة” or “robe de soirée Beirut” or “evening dress lebanon.” Good keyword research here means checking all of these, not just translating your English list.

In the GCC, Arabic search volume is much larger for many categories, so an Arabic version of key pages is often worth the investment.

What website improvements do we need to convert traffic better?

Getting visitors is only half the job. These are the fixes we make most often on Shopify and WordPress stores:

  1. Speed on mobile. Most of your visitors are on phones, often on slow connections. Compress images, remove apps and plugins you do not use, and check Core Web Vitals in Search Console.
  2. Clear product pages. Real photos, sizes, delivery time and price in plain view. Answer the questions customers normally ask on WhatsApp right on the page.
  3. Show delivery and payment options early. Cash on delivery is still expected by many buyers in Lebanon. If you offer it, say so near the “Add to cart” button, not at the last step of checkout.
  4. A visible WhatsApp button. Many people want to ask one question before buying. Let them, and track those clicks.
  5. Shorter checkout. Fewer fields, guest checkout, and no surprise fees.
  6. Trust signals. Reviews, return policy, a real address and phone number, and photos of your store or team.
  7. Search inside your store. If you have many products, a good site search turns browsers into buyers.

Small changes here often beat doubling your ad budget, because every campaign you run lands on this same website. We cover the ad side of this in why your cost per acquisition keeps rising.
